World Conflict & Concealed Carry

Everyone acknowledges conflict exists throughout the world today, but, who can explain why, and will it ever end, or, will Concealed Carry become obsolete?  Most individuals advocate love and respect for others; however, history of world-wide tension continues to grow.

Social scientists explain it as a means of attempting to better ourselves, or, improve an ideology we represent.  An alternate means of promoting such change is through compromise, understanding, responsibility and empathy to name a few.  Prime examples of significant changes resulting from conflict are; the birth of our country, human rights and labor unions, all of which were preceded by unsuccessful negotiations.

While most of us claim being “lovers” rather than “fighters”; we continue seeing a need for Concealed Carry when someone sacrifices “your” life to meet “their” demands.  On a world scale, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict reveals no end to agony that prevails, and, offering a solution is beyond the scope of this article.

Palestine was recognized as an Arab country before World War II, but, during this turmoil a massive increase in Jewish population took place.  In 1948 the United Nations divided Palestine to include Israel as a state resulting in major tensions existing today.

Israeli’s developed a self-defensive program resisting enemy attacks which has proven highly successful for many years.  Their techniques are recognized throughout the world and finally being used for airline security checks in the USA plus combat training and self-defense situations.  Israeli security goes beyond using a Concealed Carry weapon for self-defense including a hand-to-hand fighting technique called “Krav Maga”.

This method is described as an instinctive and logical approach overcoming all types of violence with simple defensive skills developed by veteran experts.  People from over the world take this training including; men and women of all ages plus law enforcement and military people.  One can become “ultimate” in self-defense with Krav Maga but it takes; desire, stamina, extensive training and discipline.  Training facilities are located across the US and may be in your area.

Ordinary guys may not choose taking this course, but, should give fore-thought to some basic tactics used in advanced defense training courses.  You may know the main tactic used by an enemy is: “surprise”, but, we should also realize villains pick the time, place and method of an assault.  We can foil their attempts by circumventing these conditions.

It’s also helpful dealing in advance with the mindset required for defensive shooting in a public place and avoiding harm to bystanders.  How do we pick out “good guys” and “bad guys” and will you be mistaken for a bad guy.  You may not take the above courses to become an “alpha dog”, however, give serious thought to the basic tactics noted; they may save an innocent life.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of humankind would be for scientists to develop a pill enabling complete eradication of our negative traits with a total reliance on treating nations, cultures and individuals as we treat ourselves.  This would eliminate a need for Concealed Carry, although I wonder…how many would take the medication…Better “keep on packin dude”.

Sam Colt & Concealed Carry

Samuel Colt (1814-1862) started up “Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company” in 1832, after a long struggle with several business ventures.  He is credited with high volume production of his 6-shot revolvers and infamous M1911 semi-automatic pistol designed by John Browning.

There is historic contention about the morality of Colt’s aggressive advertising and sales practice, supplying weapons for “both sides” during the 1861-1865 Civil War and also foreign countries under similar circumstances.  This questionable practice continues throughout our world today.

Everyone in this country; gun-haters included, owes thanks to Sam Colt for improving our living standards and manufacturing technology contributions, enabling the United States to become today’s superpower.  In addition, the impact of machining gun components within precision tolerances, allows today’s world manufacturers to assemble products at high volume with low cost.

Nowadays, Colt Manufacturing Company, LLC manufactures a variety of firearms for military, law enforcement, and personal use including the concealed carry, 9mm & 45cal Colt Defender and Colt 380 Mustang.

Their slogan, supposedly originated by early Colt sales people, has several versions; one of which is:  “God Made Man & Sam Colt Made Them Equal”…an outstanding catchphrase describing our reasons for concealed carry plus the Second Amendment.  We also don’t go looking for a fight, but, we do insist on; “Stand Your Ground” rights.

The heated debate whether citizens should Concealed Carry continues; however, have you noticed; many public officials who speak out “against” the “right to carry” employ security protection service?  We respect the commitment of public servants and advocate their need for personal protection, but, how do they conclude armed protection is not necessary for the ordinary citizen while they retain security people for themselves?  What is their opinion of an average citizen’s life?

Some large cities, like New York, have strict laws making Concealed Carry almost impossible for citizens; yet, murder rates are highly concentrated in these same locations.  Everyone will agree; a concealed weapon for self-defense does not always guarantee one’s safety whereas unfortunate incidents do occur; however, this is not valid reasoning for keeping guns away from competent, law abiding citizens.

We all know guns are considered a last resort for protecting our lives, and, Sam Colt’s sales people were exactly right when they said “God Made Man & Sam Colt Made Them Equal”.  Those against Concealed Carry present a flawed case, while 2nd Amendment supporters maintain; self-defense is an obvious “natural” right.  Public officials hire security protection, police carry weapons and our forefathers have used guns to overcome tyranny and violence since 1776.  Regrettably, the need for Concealed Carry will not change until there is a universal change in human behavior.

It would be foolish for “anti-gun” public officials to give up their personal security while “right to carry” advocates would agree…so why don’t they pursue the real causes of gun violence and quit messing with the good guys.  Be safe and keep on “packin” dude.

Concealed Carry Church Debate

Back in the late 1990’s when Concealed Carry licenses were being issued to thousands of ordinary citizens, the anti-gun crowd expected it would “take us back to the Wild West”…”there will be “shooting in the streets”. Statistics have proven these claims totally inaccurate as crime rates continue falling.  Carrying a weapon in church should be no different than carrying in public places and hopefully, our legislators and/or church hierarchy will eventually “see the light”.

Past shooting tragedies in churches across our country have stirred up debates on this subject.  Many congregations allow Concealed Carry while anti-gun people are vigorously opposed.  It appears this argument will eventually be lost, based upon common sense strategies toward impending threats from terrorists and mentally disturbed individuals.

Properly trained gun owners can be undetected and proficient in crowded environments, including churches, whereas area safety cannot be maintained with “no-carry” signs.  Some anti-gun people are, once again, concerned with the “wild west” scenario at the expense of documented shootings in churches and other no-carry zones across the country.  Churches of all denominations are over coming resistance to Concealed Carry and recognizing a need for additional security.

My curiosity about such a change caused wondering how nervous anti-gun people will react on that first day, when parishioners carry a firearm in church, which led to this following bazar dream:

“It was a beautiful Sunday morning as I got dressed in my cowboy boots and spurs, strapped on my silver clad black leather cartridge belt and outboard Colt 44 revolver, plus Stetson cowboy hat and attended 9AM Sunday Mass.  Greeters at the front entrance were stunned as I walked in; they quietly stared at my 10 gallon hat, “44 hog leg”, pointed toe boots and silver spurs.  It was quiet except for gasping and moaning of men, women and children going for cover.

Everyone made plenty of space for me as I walked down the aisle, looking for a pew, when a little old lady offered me her seat…in fact, the whole pew emptied just for me.  The celebration began as a startled priest suddenly noticed me and the word, Jesus, uncontrollably jumped from his mouth.  Later his sermon was a little shaky, but brief, with no requests for future money.

It’s my day for gathering offerings and people are extremely generous as I pass the collection basket.  One person had no money, but, threw in his watch.  Another nervous acting gentleman seemed to display deep religious faith as he continuously repeated the sign of the cross.   The petrified choir was a little off key, but, everyone seemed to like my singing.

Reverend Father was greeting people after Mass, as I walked out of church.  He cautiously reminded me not to feel obligated toward attending Sunday Mass.  My fellow parishioners politely waited in the parking lot, behind their cars, as I got on my horse, shouted, “HI HO Silver”, and rode off on a beautiful Sunday morning, to meet Tonto for breakfast.”

The above comments are pure fantasy, but, the reality of this article is; all churches would be much safer with a security program involving Concealed Carry members.

In the meantime…keep on “packin” dude.

Concealed Carry Don’t Tread On Me

Perhaps General Gadsden’s name is not familiar; however, chances are you have seen his flag.  This banner of freedom has a yellow background with a coiled rattlesnake at its center and below is an inscription; “Don’t Tread On Me”.  It all started in the 1770’s when General Christopher Gadsden, of South Carolina, offered his American flag, for a newly established United States Navy in 1775, organized to cut off British war supplies coming into the Colonies.

The birth of this great nation is all about freedom which could only be achieved and maintained by creation of a powerful force.  We often forget our strength is dependent upon participation of ordinary citizens to produce wealth, win wars, choose public leaders, and create just laws.  History repeats with the same narrative over and over; freedom is derived through sovereignty.

Concealed Carry represents power, on a personal level, achieved with a hand-gun and Constitution supporting self-protection for every capable citizen.  Gadsden’s flag symbolically reflected objections of patriots tired of being taxed and ruled by British rulers in prior years to the Revolution.  His flag is still shown today on numerous occasions, but, perhaps you did not realize its historical significance as one of America’s first flags symbolically implying to our right to carry a firearm for self-protection.

Today, some foreign nations don’t understand why we have complete freedom of speech plus rights to bear arms and think we should change our Constitution.  They criticize us for allowing “un-American” speech and personal ownership of firearms; however, this claim is lost when disregarding Benjamin Franklin’s comment, in 1786, when asked: ‘what form of government do we have?’  He replied; “A republic if you can keep it”.

Some citizens are apathetic about power until their freedom is compromised while; cost of liberty requires continuous support.  Powerful forces have always been used for self-protection, throughout history, from Stone Age clubs up to present day Concealed Carry.  It would be ideal if there were no need for individual self-protection, but, it’s not within our genome.

Benjamin Franklin’s amazing foresight continues in today’s political arena prompting 21st century citizens to stay involved in maintaining our Constitutional rights.  Admittedly, our government could be more “efficient” as an autocracy; where Washington would have “unlimited power” with politicians having absolute control when imposing “their agenda”, however, they must be reminded; this country belongs to you and I and hopefully, we citizens of this great nation will never forget.

The Gadsden flag is displayed today at; sports events, political movements, and by Libertarians seeking strict interpretation of our U.S. Constitution.  Nowadays patriots (you and I) need to support displaying the Gadsden flag as a symbol for individual rights to Concealed Carry.  It fit’s today’s environment better than it did in the earlier years of this nation and illustrates our 2nd Amendment right to Concealed Carry; not as an aggressor, but, boldly stated as a defender: Don’t Tread On Me…Keep on packin dude.

Concealed Carry Acceptance

The art of carrying weapons for self-protection; such as clubs, knives or whatever, exists since early mankind. Popular use of Concealed Carry pistols started with Henry Deringer’s single shot, muzzle loaded pistol in 1852 and modern day Concealed Carry got its start in 1976 when Georgia first introduced such laws for ordinary citizens. The ultimate goal is to have one license to carry, recognized by all states.

It became extremely popular in 2008 when the Supreme Court case: District of Columbia vs. Heller, concluded individuals have the right to possess a firearm for self-protection. New laws, favorable to carrying a firearm, are implemented each year as the number of licenses issued, estimated at 12 million, continues to grow. Currently all states recognize a citizens legal right to carry.

Future laws influenced by powerful organizations like the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Brady Campaign will affect the advancement of Concealed Carry along with public opinion. It’s quite evident, in today’s political arena; both sides of the issue are firmly entrenched in conflicting views. Compromise from US citizens should be the final force toward drafting new proposals and future legislation must contain reasonable decisions on “gun control” without trampling 2nd Amendment rights.

Current highly debated issues are; Background checks, Safety issues and “Straw Purchases”…defined as; when a first person buys a gun legally then sells it to a second person not legally permitted to own a gun. Neither pro-gun, nor, anti-gun advocates will disagree on importance of the above issues…their disagreement lies in the solution. How much attention do bad guys pay to current laws and why are they not successfully enforced? Some officials believe effective application of current laws would negate a need for future laws.

Great strides in safety have been made with handgun design plus owner training and aptitude issues, but, we can never abandon continuous efforts for improvement. Perhaps the NRA could do more to help assure a good reputation for Concealed Carry’s future by taking a more assertive stand supporting background checks and qualifications for licensing that relate to a person’s gun handling competence and mental stability.

License registrations underwent a major expansion in 2008, regardless of opposition from anti-gun groups, and as this growth continues, more “actual” experience data will be available either improving, or, damaging the reputation of Concealed Carry. Thorough programs for qualifying and training applicants to own and carry a firearm must be implemented and/or maintained thus assuring continuation of public acceptance.

Perhaps, if Concealed Carry continues with its favorable image, we may be able to carry in areas, across this nation, where shooting incidents are well documented such as; public buildings, college campus and churches. Of course, there will always be a few reckless offenders and strict penalties must be imposed on these troublemakers, including license revocation.

NRA and Brady Campaign officials will continue with their agenda and hopefully US Citizens will keep informed and influence suitable choices. Regardless of future laws; people will instinctively protect themselves and loved ones from harm with guns, clubs, knives or whatever. Concealed Carry offers an efficient, powerful, quick and effective response…Henry Deringer made this discovery back in 1852. Continue supporting the good reputation of Concealed Carry and as always…keep on packin dude.

Concealed Carry & Shooting 101

We covered the instructions at Concealed Carry class along with learning many other essentials such as; pistol operation, safety, cleaning and storage, hand gun types, ammunition types etc. Covering a sizable amount of information and training involved, digesting large quantities of information without allowing much time to dwell on the details.

After receiving certification, some students anxiously search for higher level educational materials covering self-defense tactics and skills, but, without a strong grasp on the basics, developing other expertise could be fruitless. For example; it may not do much good to Concealed Carry If you can’t shoot straight.

Occasionally it’s helpful to analyze shooting habits by reviewing simple elements necessary for successful shot placement during a self-defense confrontation. Concealed Carry old timers, who instinctively practice shooting accuracy at the range, may drift into some problems at which time, a review of fundamentals would be helpful.

First of all, to become an expert, shooters must take a firm yet comfortable body posture while facing a target with a two-hand firm grip on their weapon. Some of us may have learned, the hard way, to keep your support hand below the slide to avoid being nipped during recoil.

Extend your arms and lean forward comfortably, yet stiff enough to absorb recoil. An unstable support will sacrifice accuracy and may even produce casing ejection snags. A firm hand grip and rigid arm position allows being on target and transfers sufficient slide recoil energy for ejection of spent casings. Both feet must be firmly planted with equal weight distribution while leaning slightly forward to absorb recoil and not go off balance. These essentials will provide a rigid foundation for shot execution.

Remember to take a comfortable breath of air and hold, while focusing on target, to maximize body and hand steadiness. At this stage; bring the target into alignment with the front and rear site placing major emphasis on the front sight while steadily “squeezing” the trigger at a constant rate.

Shot groupings constantly off center are often caused by improper trigger squeeze. This results in groupings at a 7 to 8 o’clock position for a right hander and 4 to 5 o’clock position for left hand shooters. There are other circumstances where 12 o’clock area groupings indicate shooters tend to anticipate recoil by slightly pulling back as if to absorb recoil just before the shot.

Another condition, not often recognized, is trigger finger contact. Wrapping too much of one’s finger around the trigger will cause a slight wrist rotation thus shooting leftward at 9 o’clock for right handers; opposite side for left handers. The “finger print” area, only, should make trigger contact allowing a smooth parallel stroke in line with target. These conditions can be helped by mentally training to continuously squeeze the trigger at a continuous rate before, during and “after” shots are fired.

Using these elementary principles helps one to become an expert at the “range” but, what happens to mind and body during a life threatening confrontation? There is no way your brain will allow consciously stepping through shooting fundamentals during threatening circumstances…you need to be on “automatic pilot”. The so called “basics” are just that, however, they must be mastered before harnessing additional mind and body skills for Concealed Carry…keep on packin dude.

Formula for Concealed Carry

Daily information from advertising offers a variety of choices for selecting personal protection firearms and accessories. It’s an art, rather than a science based upon one’s personal preferences, frequency of carry, weapon size, holster location, dress requirements, body metrics etc. Everyone has different levels of interest in Concealed Carry while some carry occasionally and others carry daily, plus train regularly at the range.

Regardless of beginning interest level; the wrong choice of gun and holster will discourage Concealed Carry. A wide range of handgun sizes from a 22 caliber Derringer style, up to a 410 Taurus Judge are available. When visiting local gun shops, a novice may be greatly influenced by specific handgun “feel” and sometimes forget necessary features assuring long term Concealed Carry practice.

Purchasing a handgun too large will create comfort and concealment issues. Proper gun and holster choice avoids additional expenses and can allow using your current wardrobe. Most inside waistband (IWB) styles require purchasing larger size trousers to accommodate additional weapon and holster space. IWB holsters come in a wide variety of designs and can be worn on the “strong arm” side or in a “cross draw” position. They are the most popular Concealed Carry holster style. Other designs can be found, for your reference, at the Wikipedia website

Everyone’s body shape is different; review various holster types available and give thought to where a gun and holster will fit best on your body contour. Outside waistband (OWB) holsters offer “fast draw” potential but are more difficult to hide. Keep in mind, you will be carrying during four seasons and summer is obviously a most difficult time for concealment.

Sitting comfort becomes an issue with IWB and OWB holsters, while driving your automobile, and/or, at your daily job. This is one of the most difficult body positions for long term comfort and concealment. Brandishing also becomes a concern when moving to different positions such as bending and twisting.

A new gun introduction, weighing only 10.2 ounces, called, the “Curve” by Taurus is an extremely innovative idea designed for ultimate concealment. It addresses all main features for an excellent Concealed Carry handgun including; well rounded “snag free” corners, laser aiming accuracy and a novel curved handle that hugs your body profile for improved concealment.   Some other excellent choices in the 10 to 12 ounce range are offered by; Beretta, Kahr, Kel Tec, NAA, Ruger, Smith & Wesson and Ruger.

Small 380 handguns with a laser sights serve well for Concealed Carry. They can be deadly, extremely accurate and comfortable to carry all day. Proficiency and tolerance for handling a small gun can be developed at the target range. Shooting a 10 ounce pistol is a minor discomfort compared to wearing and hiding a 20 ounce gun all day. An FBI study on “Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness” concludes target accuracy and bullet penetration are more important than caliber size.

“Reach restriction”’, a critical factor not often thought of, can be simulated by imaginary draws from different holster locations. Reach across the front of your body with hand above belt to simulate a cross draw and also, reach behind your hip with your hand above belt to simulate a hip holster location and compare each. Which position would be best for comfort and ease of access during a confrontation?

The formula for purchasing a Concealed Carry handgun and holster involves careful evaluation of personal needs. Make proper handgun and holster selections and you will…keep on packin dude.
