Crime Rates and Concealed Carry

According to a 2010 FBI Crime Report; murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, larceny th, auto theft, and arson are all lower.  We continuously see reports crime rates are going down.  Some pundits make an effort to explain this phenomenon as a result of Concealed Carry permit increases and others proclaim no relation.  John R Lott Jr., from the University of Maryland Foundation and William M Landes, from University of Chicago Law School have made an interesting study in favor of Concealed Carry which claims multiple public shootings are impacted by implementation of Concealed Carry handgun laws. University of Chicago Law School, John M. Olin Law & Economics Working Paper No. 73

On the other hand, a study was made by the Violence Policy Center (VPC) which shed a more negative light on Concealed Carry.  The VPC states Concealed Carry Permits allow “dangerous” individuals to carry concealed weapons.   they offer statics from May 2007 to April 2009 revealing a sum total of 50 police officers and civilians were killed by Concealed Carry permit holders.  It would be ludicrous to think we can reduce this occurrence to zero and there is no doubt laws should exist to screen out such undesirable elements.   Allowance for “any” citizen to carry is a careless policy that should not exist.

Second amendment rights are great, however, it’s obvious from endless media reports; guns are getting into wrong hands and encouraging irresponsible behavior.  There are opportunities to correct this problem, but, politicians, special interest groups, social leaders and apathetic citizens are ineffective deterrents.  It’s interesting to note; “after” each mass shooting tragedy, background media information is released about the shooters erratic behavior.  Why can’t this same type of information be made know “before” a tragedy occurs?

There will always be tragedies due to imperfect nature of humanity; however, the system for purchasing a firearm must be improved.  Individuals should not be allowed to purchase a firearm unless qualified as law abiding and mentally competent with character references from close associates, or, certified professionals.  Law enforcement officials indicate most crimes are thwarted by ordinary citizens…we must all become more vigilant.  Comprehensive “financial reports” exist on individuals…why not more extensive background checks.  Unfortunately; society is evolving to where we must give up privacy, or, suffer the violent consequences.

US citizens have more guns than any other country in the world, however, it should be noted taking away guns from law abiding citizens is not a solution.   The bad guys don’t play fair.  Both sides on the issue of gun control need to work together modifying laws based upon lessons learned with the understanding; there is no perfect solution.  No proponent of 2nd amendment rights should tolerate careless laws which endanger lives of ordinary citizens and tarnish the image of our right to carry.

Let’s continue debating on Concealed Carry while keeping our 2nd amendment rights and law abiding citizens in mind.  History will guide us to the best solution if we listen objectively.  In the meantime, continue to be a proponent of Concealed Carry with understanding and responsibility for self-protection and loved ones…keep on packin dude.
